003/225 - Wallasey Golf Club

Wallasey is well known as the Home of Stableford, but this undersells what a wonderful course it is.

Dr Frank Stableford was indeed a member, and it is said his scoring system was derived on the Second hole. Frustrated by his medal round coming to an early end after a high score on a particularly windy day - his resulting points system is a to amateur golfers is appreciated to this day.

But back to the course itself, it boasts some of the best dune land in England. Holes such as Three, Eleven, Sixteen and Eighteen wouldn't look out of place on any world class links. As good as it is, it's a course with enormous untapped potential.

Some wonderful golfing land was lost after the Second World War - the War Office having requisitioned a large parcel. Furthermore, the fairways of the Fourth and Seventeenth holes were excavated to build up sea wall embankments for the River Mersey.

The dunes at Wallasey are rare in England. Only courses like Saunton, Birkdale and a handful of other can boast of such grand golfing land. Under the expert hand of John McLoughlin and my colleagues at Clayton, DeVries and Pont, I am certain it'll start climbing the ranking lists. It has masses of potential and hopefully we can make the most of it.
