The southern Lake District isn't a typical links destination. Driving through the heavily industrial Barrow-in-Furness, we wondered if we might have taken a wrong turn. However, crossing the Jubilee Bridge onto Walney Island is a fitting location for the links.

The links itself is a stern test. Often overlooked in favour of its better known neighbours, West Lancs is a classy links. Rumpled land between the sea and a railway track - a tried and tested formula for great golf.

This 9 hole municipal course is undoubtedly a links, and therefore an oversight from Campbell and Peper's book 'True Links'. There are a few courses in their list I disagree with - both inclusions and exclusions - and I'm looking forward to stimulating some serious debate when I publish my list at the end of the tour!

003/225 - Wallasey Golf Club
The dunes at Wallasey are rare in England. Only courses like Saunton, Birkdale and a handful of other can boast of such grand golfing land. Under the expert hand of John McLoughlin and my colleagues at Clayton, DeVries and Pont, I am certain it'll start climbing the ranking lists. It has masses of potential and hopefully we can make the most of it.

002/225 - Leasowe Golf Club
Leasowe Golf Club was formed in 1891, the first Captain being a gentlemen called John Ball Jr. This is not an insignificant fact, as at the time of the club's inauguration, he happened to be defending Champion Golfer of the Year.
