004/225 - The Warren (Municipal) Golf Course

This 9 hole municipal course is undoubtedly a links, and therefore an oversight from Campbell and Peper's book 'True Links'. There are a few courses in their list I disagree with - both inclusions and exclusions - and I'm looking forward to stimulating some serious debate when I publish my list at the end of the tour!

The Warren is set a little back from New Brighton's promenade. A roughly rectangular plot (plus a couple of holes in the sand dunes of the neighbouring park) there is enough character in the land to justify its inclusion. Holes such as the Fifth and Sixth are solid links holes - a par 5 that approaches blind if you don't quite make the carry over the crest of the hill, and an intricately bunkered par 3.

The Warren isn't a contender for the greatest links in the North West, but as municipal golf goes it's a rare example of true links - playable all year and maintained on a budget by the local council.
