005/225 - West Lancashire Golf Club

Travelling north across to River Mersey, the next course we come to is The West Lancashire Golf Club.

West Lancs is the oldest in the Lancashire county - Royal Liverpool officially being part of Cheshire.

There is a great shared history between these two clubs that endures to this day. Harold Hilton, one of Hoylake's great Champions of the late 19th century, was the club's first paid Secretary. Even now, the Captain of West Lancs speaks at Royal Liverpool's Spring Dinner - the most important evening in the club's calendar. The other two speakers are the incoming club Captain, and Captain of the R&A.

The links itself is a stern test. Often overlooked in favour of its better known neighbours, West Lancs is a classy links. Rumpled land between the sea and a railway track - a tried and tested formula for great golf.

I’m always quick to take up a round at West Lancs.
