018/225 - Furness Golf Club
Forgive me for skipping ahead.
On reviewing my photos of courses along Englands Golf Coast, I decided they weren't up to scratch. As they're so accessible for me, I thought I'd come back to them later in the posting schedule and jump ahead to Furness Golf Club.
Furness is the 6th oldest golf course in England, and officially the 3rd oldest links.
The southern Lake District isn't a typical links destination. Driving through the heavily industrial Barrow-in-Furness, we wondered if we might have taken a wrong turn. However, crossing the Jubilee Bridge onto Walney Island is a fitting location for the links.
The condition was commensurate with the £20 greenfee, but the quality of some of the holes far surpassed it. Was impressed by many.
The driveable Third and the spectacular setting of the Eight - alongside Morecambe Bay - are two that stick in my memory.
Less for reasons of the hole and more for binning a full 5 iron - but 17 was pretty memorable too.
If you're ever on a family holiday in the Lakes and have a hankering for some golf, I would encourage you to head down for Furness.
It's a little like the town it resides in. Rough around the edges and a little tired on the surface, but with a proud history and flourishes of true quality.
